CNC Machining FAQs

How does CNC machining work?

CNC machining is a subtractive manufacturing process that removes material from a solid block to create the desired part. This is done by cutting, milling, turning, drilling, boring, and shaping the material into precise forms with various diameters and shapes. Unlike additive manufacturing, which builds objects by adding layers of material, CNC machining works by removing material.

CNC machining is highly versatile and can work with a wide range of materials such as metals, plastics, wood, foam, glass, and composites. This flexibility makes it a popular method in various industries for creating accurate and efficient parts.

What are the applications of CNC machining?

CNC machining is used across many industries, including aerospace, automotive, electronics, medical, consumer, and robotics. In aerospace and automotive, it helps create precise engine parts, structural components, and other intricate elements. In the medical field, CNC is essential for manufacturing devices, implants, and surgical tools. Additionally, it plays a key role in electronics by producing housings, circuit boards, and connectors. The process is also used for custom part production, prototyping, and woodworking, offering high precision and consistency.

What is the cost of CNC machining?

The cost of CNC machining depends on factors like part complexity, quantity, and lead time. For similar parts, CNC lathes typically cost less than standard 3-axis milling. On the other hand, 5-axis machining tends to be more expensive, with continuous 5-axis milling costing more than indexed 5-axis (3+2 milling) and almost double that of standard 3-axis machining.

To minimize costs, larger production runs are recommended. They help spread the setup costs across multiple units. The most accurate way to determine costs is to submit a 3D CAD model for an interactive quote with design for manufacturability (DFM) feedback.

What is the typical CNC machining surface finish?

After CNC machining, parts usually have visible tool marks, referred to as an “as-machined” or “as-milled” surface finish. The standard surface roughness (Ra) ranges from 1.6 to 3.2 μm. Higher-quality finishes, such as 0.8-1.6 μm or even 0.2-0.8 μm, can be achieved. However, they require additional machining time and may increase the cost. At LTC Proto, we also offer a wide variety of surface finishes to enhance the quality and appearance of CNC-machined parts.

Can your CNC machining service accommodate complex geometries and 2D drawings?

Yes, we specialize in producing parts with complex geometries. Our platform supports both 2D and 3D drawings and allows you to upload your designs for easy configuration. Our quoting engine automatically analyzes the drawings for any specific details and provides detailed Design for Manufacturability (DFM) analysis. This ensures precision and accuracy in the production process.

How do I get CNC machining quotes?

You can get CNC machining quotes by uploading your design files to our quotation platform. We accept various file formats, including STP, IGES, PDF,  DWG, and STL. Along with the design files, please provide information on the required quantities, raw materials, machining processes, any necessary secondary operations, and any relevant specifications. Including details such as target pricing or lead times can also help us provide a more accurate quote.

Do you have a minimum order quantity (MOQ) for your CNC machining services?

We do not impose a strict minimum order quantity (MOQ). Whether you need a single prototype or a large production run, we can accommodate your order. Our flexible approach ensures that all customers, regardless of order size, receive high-quality parts and dedicated service for their specific needs.

What is the typical lead time for your CNC machining services?

Lead times for CNC machining services online vary depending on the part’s complexity, material selection, and production schedule. Simple parts can often be delivered within just a few days, sometimes as fast as three days after setup. For more complex parts or larger orders, lead times may extend to several weeks. Once we receive your order and complete the necessary documentation, we will confirm the expected delivery date based on current production workloads and part requirements. Delivery times typically range from 3 business days to a few weeks, depending on the specifics of your order.
